How precious is a stone?
How precious is a flower? How much more precious is an animal? and then again, how precious is a person?
It seems to me that each becomes more precious as each acquires more qualities of life. The stone has no life, the flower lives but has little movement, the animal – movement but no conscious awareness of its life. A person is alive, mobile and aware of itself. But what I think makes all of life so much more precious than a stone is death…. The stone never dies and is therefore not very special.
The infinite is insignificant, it has no beginning nor end, which makes it not so very precious. We might think that a rare stone is precious but each person is vastly more rare as they are the ONLY one of their kind, that will ever be. Because of our life and death, we become precious and without them, we would just be a stone, lifeless and deathless, going on forever. Without death life would not be precious.
Death is what makes life precious.
